It’s “The sweetest little fair in Sonoma County,” and this year it’s happening August 11th and 12th. The Gravenstein Apple Fair is sponsored by Sonoma County Farm Trails and has a long and rich history in Sonoma County. Sebastopol staged its first Apple Show in 1910 on Main Street in a tent across from the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Railway Depot. The event now draws a huge crowd and is hosted at Ragle Ranch Park.
The fair kicks off Saturday, August 11 at 8 a.m. with the 5K and 10K run at Holy Ghost Hall in Sebastopol, sponsored by Santa Rosa Fleet Feet. It continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is the perfect weekend activity for families, farm lovers and visitors to Sonoma County.
This small event celebrating the tart but sweet apple called the Gravenstein became an annual bash occurring every August that started in 2002 and focuses on showcasing apples and apple products during the peak of their season.
With events including the 5k and 10k fun run, a farmers marketplace, valet bike parking, entertainment stages, a health & wellness grove, field games and activities, agriculture and community exhibits, a children’s village, food vendors, artisans and crafters and so much more, this is an event you don’t want to miss!
This year, two new events have been added! One of them is the Singing Competition in which the winner receives an all expenses paid trip to an American Idol Season 13 audition! The finalists will be performing live at the fair.
The second event is the 1st Annual Gravenstein Apple Tug of War Competition! Think you are strong enough? The winner will receive the coveted Golden Apple Trophy and bragging rights!
Other contests include apple juggling, pie eating, caramel apple eating, pie baking and more! See the contests page for more details.
Attractions at this years’ festival include the Wine Tent, the Microbrew Tent, the Children’s Museum and activity area, horse drawn buggy rides, beekeepers, games, arts & crafts booths, 50 food vendors and of course the competitions! While you’re there, pick up one of the unique and coveted Gravenstein Apple Fair 2012 posters or collect all 6!
